The historical centres are vulnerable contexts, where a balance between heritage safeguard and adaptation to the city changes in necessary. Following the analysis of the built environment, the students have to deal with the extremely particular reality of India, far from European cities conception which we are accustomed to, both in its built-up structure as in the way of living it. The approach to the historical parts in the urban context has evolved framing the new intervention as an improve to the livability of the old city centres, rather than a “contamination” or a fragmentation in a consolidated environment, or a project for its own sake. The new professionals to be need the cognitive and practical tools to understand and to act, in a conscious way, in the historical reality being studied.
The workshop aims to increase the interdisciplinary knowledge directed to the analysis of the historical centers through diagnostic methods, focused on the deepening of a specific theme, at the local level, of great interest in contemporary architecture such as the redevelopment and revitalization of undervalued historic districts, actually disconnected to the rest of a steadily growing city.
Understanding the Urban Heritage changes allows to control them, achieving a balance between sustainability and restoration.
